Youth protests turned India’s credibility crisis into a political retreat

Youth protests over exam leaks expanded into a challenge over jobs, meritocracy, and government credibility, forcing the education minister out and pushing Modi to retreat. The movement therefore shifted Indian politics from an education dispute toward a broader test of the government’s political invulnerability.

Police violence, protest restrictions, and unresolved demands for accountability kept the crisis open even after the government offered concessions and replaced the minister. At the same time, backlash against ethanol blending became a separate economic liability, with opponents beginning to borrow the youth movement’s organizing tactics.
