Fed tightening becomes a cycle
Markets moved from pricing a single rate increase to anticipating a broader and potentially prolonged tightening cycle. The Federal Reserve's first hike since 2023, divided guidance and political confrontation made future policy decisions more consequential.
The 10-year Treasury yield crossed 5% and sovereign bonds sold off, pushing borrowing costs and discount rates higher across markets. Rising federal debt-service costs and heavier reliance on short-term issuance extended the pressure beyond portfolio valuations.
Oil surged above $100 after shipping and pipeline disruptions, then retreated as inventories offset some supply fears. Even with the pullback, energy costs kept inflation expectations and the prospect of prolonged monetary restraint alive.
Higher yields pushed stocks lower and exposed the weakness of narrow market leadership, while AI-linked shares faced renewed scrutiny over earnings and valuations. The S&P 500 and European equities extended declines as investors reassessed growth-sensitive exposure.
The Bank of Japan raised rates at its fastest pace in decades, but the yen initially weakened as dissent and mixed guidance reduced expectations for follow-up hikes. Intervention concerns and higher Japanese yields then revived risks for carry trades and global capital flows.
Higher US rates strengthened the dollar, raised funding costs and threatened emerging-market currencies, bonds and equities. India showed some insulation through intervention and reserves, but local assets remained vulnerable to further Federal Reserve tightening.
Gold remained caught between demand for protection from inflation and geopolitical risk and the rising opportunity cost created by higher yields. It later recovered modestly as oil prices eased, but rate fears continued to limit its gains.
Turkey moved from a sharp stock-market withdrawal and reclassification risk to freezing funds and preparing a large liquidation tied to an alleged scheme. The response is intended to contain contagion but puts investor protection and asset valuations under sharper scrutiny.
